Undertaking my elective at Kyoto University Hospital in Ophthalmology was a transformative experience that profoundly impacted my medical education. The institution's status as a leader in ophthalmology and visual sciences in Japan provided great opportunities for learning and growth. Shadowing Professor Tsujikawa and his team not only deepened my understanding of treating macular diseases but also exposed me to cutting-edge Japanese imaging equipment, highlighting the institution's commitment to innovation. I was exposed to various aspects of ophthalmic care, from surgeries to examinations and imaging techniques, which broadened my understanding of the discipline in the context of Japan’s population.
Moreover, my time in Japan extended beyond professional realms to include cultural immersion. The warmth and support shown by the team, coupled with the opportunity to explore Kyoto's rich cultural heritage, made my stay not just educational but also personally enriching. The balance between experiencing Japanese culture and engaging in clinical experiences created a holistic learning environment that I will always cherish.
The support from the medical team were invaluable, particularly in navigating cultural differences and language barriers. Their efforts to accommodate my dietary requirements and facilitate my active made me feel welcomed and valued as part of the team.
The elective provided unique opportunities, such as performing direct fundoscopy under supervision as well as performing cataract surgery on animal eyes, which are rarely available to students in the UK. These experiences deepened my appreciation for ophthalmology and solidified my enthusiasm for pursuing a career in this field.
My experience at Kyoto University Hospital is one I sincerely cherish, and I am eager to return for further training at this renowned institute. The wealth of knowledge and cultural exposure it offers are unparalleled, and I am grateful for the opportunities provided during my elective.
